My Swayze. I cried last night, watching Road House and then Ghost. I’m allowed to be sad, Patrick Swayze’s kick ass moves and warm, soft smile have been a presence in my life for all of it. Alll of it. I’m still sort of young, be quiet. I don’t know if you remember last year, when I found out he had cancer and wrote this.*sigh*
Today I will mourn The Sway. But I don’t want to cry anymore. So I’ll laugh, at this:
My head is about to pop off. Currently, it’s as swollen as the original Dora’s big ass cabeza. Moms are all in a friggin’ tizzy over a SHADOW. A fucking silhouette. Seriously folks?! Can we wait and see if she looks like a Bratz doll before we throw a fit? This is totally premature. It seems like people just want to claim FIRST?! in attacking what they don’t know anything about. Calm down folks! Can we reserve judgment after we see what she actually looks like?
I also find the simultaneous uproar over the Tattoo Barbie to be amusing. It’s bad for Barbies to come with toy tattoo machines and stickers because it gives girls the ‘wrong message’ (that they can be successful artists for a living, gorgeous with ink, or break the mold as to what’s ok for girls to do?). I’d go into detail, but Maria basically already took care of it. What I don’t get is that it’s also bad for Dora to embody everything that they would say is in opposite of that? What am I missing?
Dora does not look the slightest bit inappropriate. Not. one. bit. She looks older. Which is the point of this!! This is not the new Dora The Explorer, that will be playing on Nick Jr. at 9am. This Dora is not geared towards preschoolers. She’s. not. a. baby. anymore. Inappropriate would be an 8 year old in orange shorts and ruffled yellow socks. I’m just sayin’… This is what children wear. You wouldn’t be hard pressed to walk into an elementary school and find a classroom full of little girls in cute outfits, not dissimilar to what this new Dora looks to be wearing.
What’s wrong with her clothes? Nothing. Not a damn thing. There’s no sex appeal. Just because she’s shaped like an actual child and not a basketball, she’s ‘sexed up’? Pfft.
People act like it’s bad for girls to be interested in fashion, clothing, girly things. Now if you know me, you know that I am totally against shoving stereotypes down the throats of my daughters. I get a little tickle of elation every time they go for the primary colored toy over the pink, and want the action figure over the doll. I do not allow Bratz or those ‘My Style’ Barbies in my house. But there is nothing wrong with young girls liking to look good, as long as that doesn’t include exposing their navel, wearing eyeshadow or stilettos, give or take some sluttiness.
The Bella is quite the teeny fashionista. She chooses her own clothes when we go shopping (with my input, of course) and picks out her own clothes every morning. She has her own sense of style, makes adventurous choices and does the damn thing. I love it. Ask her what she wants for any holiday or birthday? To go shopping for clothes. A new pair of shoes. The child has more in her closet than I ever did. This is something she’s into, and I’m more than happy to encourage it. I style her hair the way she requests as long as time allows, and laugh watching her play stylist to her little sister. It’s her thing. Why is that bad? Oh right! It ain’t.
I asked her if she liked the new older Dora’s shadow. She said yes, and I asked her what she liked. Her reply? “I like that she has long hair like me. I like her skirt, and she has on leggings like I wear with my skirts. And I have shoes like that! but with no bows” I asked her if she liked what the old Dora was wearing. “No, she wore bad colors. And I didn’t like her hair.” Y’all know Dora had bad hair. A fucking bowl cut does not work for Latin people. We have thick hair. They should have known better.
I guess what I’m saying is that people are either putting the cart before the horse, getting their facts mixed up with general assumptions or just looking for an opportunity to bitch. Dora isn’t sexy. She’s just growing up – which guess what folks? All kids do.
USA is very unrecognized for it’s original programming. It’s hardly the go to channel when you’re flipping down the list in your head, trying to name off all the shows that you like by channel because it’s just easier that way, for some alphabetical then chronological by original date of airing, then weekday and time slot, then dewey decimal systematized list that you have on a special key chain zip drive of all the movies, shows, musicals and albums you like. Wha’? *blinks* Oh come on: don’t act like you don’t do that shit too. Psshaw.
They have a couple of excellent shows like Monk, which everyone knows and loves, Burn Notice, which most have never heard of before, all of the new Law & Order: Criminal Intents, and what has become one of my personal favorites, Psych.
I admit that I was unwilling to give Gus and Shawn [played by Dule Hill and James Roday, respectively] their shot when the show debuted. Seemed to me like a Monk knockoff, what with the quirky crime fighter and all, and I wasn’t having it. But when the Season 1 marathon ran just before Season 2 premiered, I figured I’d give it a shot since my DVR had a whopping 35 out of 80 hours free. I’m so very glad I did.
Shawn is a crime consultant with the Santa Barbara police department. He has incredible analytical and observational abilities that he uses to convince those around him that he’s a psychic. Gus is his reluctant partner, and life long best friend who’s also a pharmaceuticals sales representative. The show follows them along on their kooky adventures solving both private crimes and those where they assist the police, one of whom, Detective Lassiter, played by Timothy Odmundson of Judging Amy [another favorite of mine] ‘fame’, cannot stand to see them coming.
The script is clever, the cast is extremely likable, the jokes are actually funny and the plot lines, though predictable, are always entertaining. I can easily pin down what makes this show a winner: Shawn & Gus. Their duo dynamics make for a wildly fun and energetic 42 minutes that I’m always looking forward to.
I thought maybe you all would be interested in this hidden gem of a show. I saw that last season was picked up as filler for NBC, which I believe enabled it to gain some more fans, but there aren’t nearly enough of us as it deserves. I’m glad that it’s not on a large national network, because with last fall’s Journeyman fiasco [yes I'm still reeling and still pissed, they canceled the best show to have debuted in recent years for lack of ratings which the fucking network didn't do one fucking thing to help them improve, being as it was too concerned with pumping up it's fucktardly craptastic show Bionic Woman] I don’t think we’d still be getting new snippets of these guys.
If you have any extra space in your TiVo, or nothing to do/watch on Fridays @ 10pm [oh don't act like most of y'all are doing much: you're parents just like I am!] check it out. They have full episodes on Hulu.com & usanetwork.com too. I think you’ll like it.
Tomorrow it’ll be back to your regularly scheduled blogging. I just had to get this out. My television/movie/celebpop/music blog will be up and running soon I hope. I just haven’t named it yet. As a matter of fact, I have a poll I’d like you all to take regarding that:
[polldaddy poll="833417"] Thank you, and GOOD NIGHT ST LOUIS!!!
but I decided that this would be a better fit. Rest in Peace ya’ old bastard.
And here’s a meme from Avitable. If you know me, you know that I love movies. Obsessively. As a matter of fact – I have an unpublished page here listing the movies I’m seeing this year. Oh, add me on Flixster. Entertainment Weekly came up with a list of the top 100 movies of the last 25 years. The films I’ve seen are bolded, and the ones I favorite have asterisks by them.
